Smoking in Bed: Nyree Dawn Porter



This New Zealand born actress first gained wide recognition in the starring role of Irene in the 1967 broadcast of John Galsworthy's "Forsyte Saga." Her first name 'Nyree' is a phonetic spelling of her birth name 'Ngaire', a Maori word for a shrub with star-shaped flowers.

Vintage Hollywood's Interracial Valentines


The issue of race was no less significant in Hollywood during the 20th Century than anywhere else in America.  Despite the enormous social pressures against such unions,  cupid's arrow still managed to strike up a few sparks of exogamous romance among the film community.  Interracial marriage was, by the way, illegal in 31 states until, in 1967, the Supreme Court ruled such laws unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia.
